International corporate governance expert Professor Ralph Walking will deliver the inaugural Philip Brown Public Lecture in Accounting.

Presented by CPA Australia, together with the UWA Business School and Curtin Business School, the annual Philip Brown Public Lecture in Accounting recognises the work and achievements of the UWA Business School's Emeritus Professor Philip Brown.

Emeritus Professor Philip Brown co-authored a paper that revolutionised global understanding of the impact of corporate disclosure on share prices, helped develop UWA's MBA course, and was an inaugural inductee into Australia's Accounting Hall of Fame. He was also appointed joint Presidential Scholar for 2012 by the American Accounting Association and, in the same year, made a Member of the Order of Australia.

This year's lecture will examine the process of electing company directors and, in particular, the impact of shareholder votes.

Professor Walkling, from Drexel University, will use a sample of more than 2,500 director elections to explore questions including:

  • What is the role of firm performance, corporate governance and director performance on shareholder votes?
  • How do directors respond to lower votes?
  • What is the role of advisory services such as Institutional Shareholders Services?
  • And finally, do votes matter?

The presentation will be relevant to both academics and practicing accountants and company directors.

Professor Ralph Walkling is Visiting Professor at the UWA Business School, Founder and Director of the Centre for Corporate Governance and Stratakis Chair in Corporate Governance and Professor of Finance at Drexel University in Philadelphia.

The inaugural Philip Brown Public Lecture in Accounting will be held at 6pm on Monday 7 October at the UWA Business School. To register your attendance, email Tundi Jeges .
