The University of Western Australia is introducing a new Master of Translation Studies course in 2014 to give postgraduate students a world-class, accredited program of study in contemporary translation studies between English and Chinese, French, German and Italian.

Associate Professor Meng Ji, convenor of the degree (and herself fluent in Chinese, Spanish, Japanese and English), described it as the best possible mix of cutting-edge scholarship and practical, professional training.

"As an inter-cultural field, the degree is able to draw on UWA's partnerships with top ranked universities in Shanghai, Beijing, and across Europe, and all students will have the opportunities to spend a period of study at a partner university, and experience an internship in the language services industry, either in Australia or overseas," she said.

"In an increasingly globalised, multi-lingual environment, Translation Studies has emerged as an important field of academic study and professional application.

"Students will become bilingual/multilingual professionals who will receive not just technical translator training but also develop useful and versatile communication skills ensuring excellent employment outcomes."

The course is two years full time or five years (maximum) part time. The Faculty will be offering 10 two-year scholarships, each valued at $2000 per year, to the highest-ranked applicants for the MTS. The scholarships are available to both domestic and international students.

The course is also available to graduates who can show they have knowledge of a relevant language equivalent to that of studying as a major.
