Assistant Professor Chunbo Ma from the School of Agricultural and Resource Economics has recently been awarded the 2013 Australia China Emerging Future Leaders in Low Emissions Coal Technology Fellowship by the Australian Academy of Sciences and Engineering (ATSE). Eight Australian researchers have been awarded the fellowship from various disciplines by ATSE via a peer nomination process with merit-based assessment.  Preference has been given to early career researchers who have shown the potential to be a future leader with their research established but international linkages with China in need of further development.

The eight awarded fellows are invited to participate in the two day Joint Coordinating Group (JCG) meeting in Melbourne including the ATSE/CERI (China's Huaneng Energy Research Institute) RD&D workshop and officials JCG meeting. The JCG meeting to be held in Melbourne from 22-24 October 2013 provides eight Australian participants with opportunities to meet with leading Australian and Chinese low emission coal technology (LECT) representatives.  They will gain an appreciation of the outstanding RD&D currently being undertaken in LECT areas, via strategic workshops, JCG Meeting and networking opportunities.

The importance of establishing closer collaboration between early career researchers of both countries in LECT is paramount as international collaboration enhances quality RD&D endeavour and helps promote greater opportunity for innovation and commercialisation to end use products.   This activity will cement interactions and provide a highly cost-effective "accelerator" to international collaborations by ensuring that both Australian and Chinese researcher teams have access to world leading partners and equipment in LECT areas.

Assistant Professor Chunbo Ma is currently doing collaborative research with scholars from North China Electric Power University looking at productivity and efficiency of China's coal fired electricity generation. A paper recently published in Energy Economics can be found here:
