A former long-serving artistic director of the UWA-founded Perth International Arts Festival has been jointly awarded the Australian entertainment industry's most prestigious award.

David Blenkinsop and international pop singer Kylie Minogue will share the JC Williamson Award for 2013.

In his 23 years of artistic leadership from 1976 to 1999, Mr Blenkinsop transformed the Festival of Perth into an internationally respected annual multi-arts festival, offering some of the world's best theatre, dance, music, film, visual arts, street art, literature and free community events.

The award is given to "individuals who have made an outstanding contribution to the Australian live entertainment and performing arts industry and shaped the future of our industry for the better".

Mr Blenkinsop and Ms Minogue will be honoured at the Helpmann Awards ceremony in Sydney on Monday 29 July.
