An extraordinary, uplifting and extremely professional performance by the sensational School of Music students was enjoyed by a capacity audience in Winthrop Hall at Sunday’s Collaboration Concert.

The UWA Symphony Orchestra, under the exact baton of Mr Christopher van Tuinen, performed magic weaving their instruments expertly around Mussorsky's Night on a Bald Mountain then abandoning any inhibitions and tackling Stravinsky's complex and controversial The Rite of Spring . The performance was simultaneously enthralling and exhausting.  Both The University of Western Australia and The Rite of Spring are celebrating 100 years in the public domain this year, which gave the event an interesting symmetry.

The afternoon's entertainment was expertly rounded out with Rachmaninoff's The Bells based on the poem by Edgar Allen Poe.  The Orchestra supported the melodic voices of the UWA Symphonic Chorus and the UWA Choral Society. The School of Music’s School Manager, Ms Toni Johnson, took centre stage to perform a hauntingly beautiful soprano solo.

Sunday’s concert was a demonstration of the rewards that are reaped when young talent is nurtured and fostered.   Neville Cohn, well-respected reviewer for The West Australian newspaper, recognised the musical feast on which Sunday’s audience indulged.  Bravo to all concerned.
