UWA Albany Centre Master of Teaching student, Sasha Claughton, is the 2013 recipient of the Centenary Trust for Women, Dr June Jones Master's Scholarship in Education.  The scholarship specifically assists women to benefit from educational opportunities at UWA.

Director of the Albany Centre, Jennifer O'Neil, said the scholarship was just recognition of Sasha's academic achievement and application to the Masters of Teaching degree which she, along with 18 students, commenced in January 2013.

In its inaugural year, the Masters of Teaching unit, which is run in conjunction with the Graduate School of Education, is designed to equip students, who already have an undergraduate degree, with the skills and knowledge required to be successful early childhood and primary teachers.

The $5000 scholarship will ease the financial burden for Sasha and assist her to buy new equipment and resources to complete her studies.

"Studying in Perth was not an option for me", Sasha said.  "Being able to achieve a Master of Teaching degree, locally, is a dream come true and the course is amazing".

"We have access to one of the best coordinators in Associate Professor Val Faulkner, as well as highly skilled lecturers who come down from Perth for intensive workshops."

"I find the course content is challenging but applicable to a real teaching environment and it equips students with a toolkit of skills and hands-on experience", she said.
