The UWA Business School last night celebrated the outstanding achievements of its teaching and research staff.

At the annual Teaching and Research Awards Ceremony, eight faculty were recognised for excellence in teaching, two professional staff for outstanding contributions to student learning, and nine faculty for outstanding research achievements.

Dean of the UWA Business School, Winthrop Professor Phil Dolan, congratulated the winners and thanked the School's faculty and professional staff for their dedication.

"The large number of nominations for teaching and service awards and intense competition for research awards is one measure of the many, many talented teachers, professional staff and researchers we have here at the School," Winthrop Professor Dolan said.

Deputy Dean of the UWA Business School, Winthrop Professor Izan, highlighted the School's outstanding research achievements in 2012.

"Last year, the federal government's Excellence in Research for Australia initiative gave UWA a score of five out of five in the discipline sub-grouping of Business and Management, placing UWA as well above world standard," Winthrop Professor Izan said.

"This assessment, together with the School's strong performance in attracting competitive research grants, illustrates the quality of our research activities."

Associate Dean Teaching and Learning, Winthrop Professor Phil Hancock, emphasised the School's reputation for outstanding teaching. "We have many outstanding teachers in the Business School, as evidenced by the number of staff who have also received national awards. We are also blessed with many excellent professional staff who make significant contributions to the positive student experience," he said.

Excellence in Teaching awards were presented to: Leo Langa (Postgraduate coursework), Andrew Williams (Undergraduate coursework-Large class), Tim Daly (Undergraduate coursework-Small class), Dee Roche (Adjunct lecturer), Alex Luksyte (Early career), Natalie Drew (Tutor), Amanda Tedjamulja (Tutor), and Leigh Smith (Tutor-commendation).

Service awards for outstanding contributions to student learning were presented to Marjory Harvey and Michael Sutherland.

Winners of the School's research awards were also recognised. These included David Day and Cristina Gibson for Dean's Best Paper Prizes, Uta Bindl and Michele Roberts for the Business School Ahern Early Career Researcher Portfolio Awards, and Alex Luksyte, Leandro Magnusson, Stijn Masschelein, Sharon Purchase and Sirimon Treepongkaruna for Dean's Research Fellowships. The School's recipients of Australian Research Council Discovery Project grants were also acknowledged.

The Faculty Teaching and Research Awards were held on 18 April 2013.
