The University of Western Australia has maintained a steady rate of undergraduate first-round offers to students in its 2013 Centenary year, following last year's record and the successful introduction of UWA's flexible new courses .

This year's figures include almost double the number of first-round offers (187) made to students from rural, remote and other areas traditionally under-represented at the University through its increasingly popular UWA Broadway alternative entry pathway.

Prospective new UWA undergraduates received a total of 4664 first-round offers.

Last year's introduction of a new curriculum based on five undergraduate degrees followed by professional and other postgraduate study aligned WA's first and oldest university with other leading international universities to offer graduates the best possible way to pursue top careers anywhere in the world.

UWA's prestigious Bachelor of Philosophy (Honours) course - introduced last year - again drew strong demand from hundreds of students, with 42 first-round offers (seven more than last year) with an ATAR score of 99.80 as the entry cut-off point.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Paul Johnson said the high number of first-round offers and continuing strong demand for UWA's BPhil (Hons) course reflected the fact that UWA had increased its ranking last year to join the world's top 100 universities at 96.

"UWA is a leading university that strives to set a high standard of excellence which - with our commitment to provide strong student support in a nurturing campus environment - creates an ideal opportunity for our brightest young minds to achieve their full potential," Professor Johnson said.

This year's first-round offers reflect increased interest in UWA's consolidated Science degree, particularly among students seeking to continue onto further studies in medicine and dentistry, and a higher number of offers to students seeking to study postgraduate law.

In other disciplines, first-round offers were roughly on a par with last year's record number.

The University's Mature-age Access Program generated 118 first-round offers, of which 109 have already been accepted.

Indigenous students seeking to gain a degree at UWA received a further 30 first-round offers - three more than last year - through the University's Provisional Entry Scheme for Aboriginal students.

Enrolment will be either on-line or in-person over the next two weeks. A further round of offers will be made at the start of February.
