A researcher from The University of Western Australia’s Faculty of Engineering, Computer and Mathematics, has been named ‘Early Career Scientist of the Year’ at the 2012 WA Science Awards.

Associate Professor Ajmal Mian, currently an Australian Research Fellow at the School of Computer Science and Software Engineering, is pioneering research in the area of 3D face and object recognition.

Since completing his PhD with Distinction at UWA in 2007, Mian has built a research team of seven comprising himself, one postdoctoral fellow and five PhD students. Together with his research team, he endeavours to find solutions to core Artificial Intelligence problems for a range of multidisciplinary applications.

“I feel honoured to receive the WA Early Career Scientist of the Year award. In fact, being a finalist for such a prestigious award was an honour in itself.” Assoc/Prof. Mian said.

Mian has previously been honoured with the Australasian Distinguished Dissertation Award from the Computing Research and Education Association of Australasia (CORE).

This is the second year in a row that a researcher from The Faculty of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics has been recognised in this way, with Professor David White also receiving the Early Career Researcher award in 2011.

The 2012 WA Science Awards winners were announced at a gala dinner attended by WA Science and Innovation Minister John Day on Thursday October 11 at the Burswood Entertainment Complex.
