The former Prime Minister of Australia, The Hon. John Howard, will present the inaugural Sir Paul Hasluck Foundation Lecture at The University of Western Australia on Thursday 27 September.

Mr Howard, who was Australia's second longest-serving Prime Minister, from March 1996 to December 2007, will speak on the topic ‘ A Proper Sense of History' .

His public lecture at UWA will be the first in a national series to mark the legacy of the late Fremantle-born Sir Paul Hasluck, who gained a Master of Arts from UWA in 1940 and later served as Australia's first WA-born Governor-General, from 1969 to 1974.

Sir Paul worked as a journalist and diplomat before his election to Federal Parliament in 1949 as the Member for Curtin. He later served as Minister for External Affairs and Minister for Defence, and played a key role in shaping Australia's post-war security and foreign policy.

Sir Paul was also a prolific writer, historian and author of books on politics, foreign affairs, public policy and poetry.
