Following the UWA newsroom story posted on 11 September, the School of Music is very pleased and proud to announce Clarinet player and UWA graduate Ashley Smith won the coveted 2012 MCA Freedman Fellowship for Classical Music award, otherwise known as the ‘genius' award, worth $15,000.

Ashley's audition was video conferenced live from Yale University where he is completing postgraduate studies.   The esteemed panel of judges deemed his performance a winner, with judge Roland Peelman, artistic director of The Song Company, describing Ashley as "a thoughtful young man who already has an impressive international network and will be a terrific ambassador for new Australian music."

Being a finalist for this award has allowed Ashley to plan a recital tour of new clarinet works visiting Finland, the US and Australia.  He will be part of the 2013 School of Music concert series, for details visit www.music.uwa.edu.au early in 2013.
