The School of Civil and Resource Engineering and COFS Large O Tube Flume was announced as the winner of the Innovation and Development category of the 2012 WA Engineering Excellence Awards.

The winners were announced on Saturday 15th September.

The Large O Tube is globally unique and simulates cyclones to assess pipeline on-bottom stability.  The research need is driven by the severe cost of stabilising the pipelines that connect Australia's offshore gas fields to shore and the pipeline design challenges due to the difficulty in predicting seabed sediment mobility with the area subject to cyclones.  The program will improve assessments of pipeline stability and lead to more efficient and safer design of WA's offshore infrastructure.
