The head of the WA Chamber of Commerce and Industry's policy, government and external relations division will join The University of Western Australia next month as Chief Adviser, Corporate and Government Affairs.

Former journalist David Harrison will take up the University role after five years with the State's peak business organisation.

UWA Vice-Chancellor Professor Paul Johnson said Mr Harrison would bring a wealth of knowledge in the areas of public policy, business and government affairs, and public campaigning and advocacy.

"In the role, Mr Harrison will be responsible for promoting the work and activities of UWA to our key external partners and stakeholders, especially business, industry and government," Professor Johnson said.

Mr Harrison said he relished the opportunity to join an organisation with such a strong national and international reputation for excellence.

"This is a fantastic opportunity.  I am looking forward to joining the UWA team and working closely with staff across the University to promote its activities to business and government," Mr Harrison said.

Mr Harrison will take up the position in early August.
