International Health and dementia expert Professor Passmore will discuss the causes of brain degeneration in dementia in a free public lecture at UWA this Tuesday 15 May.
Once considered a rare disorder, dementia is now seen as a major public health problem that is seriously affecting thousands of older Australians and their families.
Dementia is not a part of normal aging - it is caused by a fatal disease that affects the brain. It is an irreversible, progressive brain disease that slowly destroys memory and thinking skills.
Peter Passmore, Professor of Ageing and Geriatric Medicine at Queen's University Belfast, set up the Belfast Memory Clinic in 1994 to pursue his interests in dementia research. His focus has been on genetic associations in dementia, neuropsychiatric symptoms, cardiovascular factors in dementia, cognition after stroke and clinical management.
The lecture is co-sponsored by the WA Centre for Health and Ageing and the Institute of Advanced Studies at The University of Western Australia.
