Two UWA Publishing books, Between the Leaves: Stories of Australian Women, Writing and Gardens , by Katie Holmes, and The Paper War: Morality, Print Culture and Power in Colonial New South Wales , have been shortlisted in the 2012 Australian Historical Association (AHA) Awards.

The Paper War , which is shortlisted for the AHA Kay Daniels Award for a published work on convict, heritage and/or early colonial history, delves into the body of texts produced by and about Reverend Lancelot Threlkeld, who travelled to New South Wales to set up the Lake Macquarie mission.

Between the Leaves , which is shortlisted for the AHA Magarey Medal for Biography, is an intimate exploration into the lives of nine twentieth-century women - including Judith Wright, Katharine Susannah Prichard, Winifred Stephensen and Jean Galbraith - who wrote about their garden in their letters and diaries.

Between the Leaves previously received a Special Commendation in the 2011 Fellowship of Australian Writers Sid Harta Literature Award for non-fiction.

The Magarey Medal, which is awarded to a female author who has published the work judged to be the best biographical writing on an Australian subject, includes $10,000 prize money, while the Kay Daniels Award commemorates the contribution to the study and writing of history in Australia by Dr Kay Daniels (1941-2001), and includes $1,500 prize money.

The winners will be announced at the AHA Conference dinner at the University of Adelaide on Thursday, July 12, 2012.
