UWA Publishing has been shortlisted for Small Publisher of the Year as part of the 2012 Australian Book Industry Awards (ABIAs).

The awards are considered the most prestigious in Australian publishing with winners decided by an industry panel of 150 booksellers and publishers.

Director of UWA Publishing Terri-ann White said that it was the first time the University press had been nominated for an award.

"The nomination is particularly humbling in such tough economic times and represents the University's commitment to sustained vitality within the Australian book industry," she said.

UWA Publishing has made a valuable contribution to academic publishing since 1935.

An emphasis on multiple income streams and accessible specialist works has been spearheaded by Professor White since her commencement in 2006.

In 2009, the Claremont-based publisher rebranded from UWA Press to UWA Publishing, a name change spurred by the diversification of its business interests.

The ABIAs will be presented at a gala dinner in Sydney on May 18 as part of the Sydney Writers' Festival.
