Assistant Professor Shazzad Hossain, Professor Yuxia Hu and W/Professor Mark Randolph from UWA’s Centre for Offshore Foundation Systems (COFS) and School of Civil and Resource Engineering have just been awarded a significant grant as part of the Australia-China Science and Research Fund (ASCRF).

This federal government scheme, funded through the Department of Industry, Innovation, Science, Research and Tertiary Education, is in place to promote research collaborations between Australia and China.

COFS researcher Shazzad Hossain says that the award will be used to widen and deepen some of COFS’ ongoing research partnerships and will be instrumental in establishing an exchange program between COFS and their collaborating partners in China (Dalian University of Technology and HoHai University). It will also help to expedite productive collaboration with industry bodies, such as the China National Petroleum Corporation, and will open a window for developing future large-scale collaborations, such as an Australia-China Joint Research Centre.

The team has planned several activities which will be made possible by the award (worth approximately $40,000). Three PhD students will visit China for a short period of research and training, whilst other members of the research team will visit the Chinese facilities and attend a workshop. The collaborating Chinese universities will then be invited on a reciprocal trip to Perth to attend a major symposium hosted by COFS, providing the visitors with the opportunity to meet with local researchers, students and industry representatives.

The grant-winning research focuses on the Geotechnical challenges in oil and gas extraction from shallow to deep waters and was one of only two grants chosen by UWA for submission to the ASCRF scheme for 2011-12. The other researchers involved are Dr. Xu Li, Mr. Stefanus Safinus, Mr. Neyamat Ullah, Miss Wen Gao and Mr. Jingbin Zheng.
