Robert Glennon, Professor of Law at the University of Arizona and author of Unquenchable: America's Water Crisis and What To Do About It will give a free public lecture at The University of Western Australia on 6 March.

Professor Glennon, a Water Policy Advisor to Pima County, Arizona, regularly appears as a commentator and analyst for various US television and radio programs as well as print and online media.

His lecture will offer a comparative look at how the United States is responding to the water crisis, arguing that while major reforms are in progress, neither the US nor Australia can engineer its way out of the problem with the usual fixes, nor with "zany" solutions such as weather modification.

"Both Australia and the United States are struggling with overuse of a scarce resource," says Glennon.

"I'm arguing instead we need a market-based system that values water as a commodity and a fundamental human right. And that is a path on which Australia has already advanced."

He is a Visiting Scholar at the Law School at The University of Western Australia during February and March 2012. His visit to Australia has been sponsored by the National Centre of Groundwater Research and Training at Flinders University, an Australian Government initiative, supported by the Australian Research Council and the National Water Commission.
