Works have commenced immediately to achieve the ambitious targets set in the University's newly released Sustainable Development Plan 2011 - 2014 .

The Plan proposes a 20% reduction in carbon emissions and water use by 2020 compared to 2008 levels (approx 37% reduction per estimated EFTSL by 2020).

To contribute to achieving these goals the University's second solar panel will soon be installed on the roof of the Human Movement building.

Also underway are feasibility studies of water efficient fittings and energy efficient lighting.

Vice-Chancellor, Prof Alan Robson launched the Plan last Friday (November 11) describing it as, "a strategic blueprint for the University's vision of a sustainable future and a major step in our commitment to make UWA an environmentally sustainable community."

Other focus areas of recycling, transport, built form, landscape, procurement and communications and engagement are also covered in the Plan.

Proposed projects for 2012 include the development of sustainability related policies and Sustainable Development Guidelines for new and refurbished buildings.

While these operational projects will go a long way toward a sustainable University, the Vice-Chancellor was careful to point out that the dedication of staff and students was also needed.

"Commitment across all levels and sections of the University is required to achieve our desires for a socially and environmentally sustainable UWA," he said.
