Winthrop Professor and Dean of Law Stuart Kaye was one of the winners in the 2012 Australian Research Council grants announced recently by Senator Kim Carr, Minister for Innovation, Industry, Science and Research.

A joint initiative with Professor Clive Schofield , Director of Research and ARC Future Fellow at ANCORS , the project is titled "Maritime legal practice and policy in the Indian Ocean and Arabian Gulf: synergies and challenges for Australian trade and security" and will be funded for three years until 2014. It will analyse national practice relating to maritime claims and jurisdiction in the Indian Ocean and Arabian Gulf and identify areas of instability in the region that may pose a threat to freedom of international navigation and trade.

Stuart Kaye is an international, maritime and humanitarian law expert. He joined UWA as Winthrop Professor of Law and Dean in 2010. He was Professor of Law at The University of Melbourne (2006–2010) and Dean of Law at the University of Wollongong (2002–2006). He is admitted as a barrister of the Supreme Courts of New South Wales, Tasmania and Queensland. He holds degrees in arts and law from the University of Sydney. He is also a Commander in the Royal Australian Navy Reserve, serving as a legal officer, principally providing advice in operations and international law for the ADF and Border Protection Command.
