A new Masters Degree in International Journalism to be offered next year at The University of Western Australia will aim to produce the best student journalists across all media formats - print, broadcast and digital.

The new post graduate course will allow students to generate original journalism to a high industry standard and encourage them to think critically about journalism in a global context.

The Masters program will be headed by UWA's Foundation Professor of Journalism and prominent media commentator Peter van Onselen and feature an industry-based teaching team of high-profile media professionals from around the nation.

They will include Walkley award-winning journalist Anthony Klan (Wall Street Journal, The Australian), Sky News Chief Political Correspondent Kieran Gilbert and The Australian national newspaper's Business Editor, Geoff Elliott.

Guest lecturers will include the Australian Financial Review's Editor-In-Chief, Michael Stutchbury, Sky News Political Editor David Speers (Sky News) and The Australian national newspaper's Editor-at-Large, Paul Kelly.

The new Masters course will run over three semesters (including summer) in a single year and focus on domestic and international contexts to equip graduates to work in a global environment.

The Vice-Chancellor of The University of Western Australia, Professor Alan Robson, said the new Masters in International Journalism program at UWA would provide valuable new learning opportunities for graduates seeking careers in journalism.

It would also provide an excellent grounding for media advisers and communications staff to develop and manage media strategies for government and business.

"The new Masters in International Journalism program forms part of our aim to be counted among the top 50 universities in the world by 2050," Professor Robson said.
