A number of School of Music students have been accepted into Australian Youth Orchestra (AYO) activities for their 2012 season.

These students achieved their success after competing nationally with other young talents through an intensive application and audition process.  The School of Music recognises and congratulates these students on both their musical ability and their endeavour in achieving such outstanding results.

First year violin student Elena Phatak achieved a place in both the Australian Youth Orchestra (AYO)  February season led by Conductor Christopher Hogwood, and the July season with Conductor Simone Young.  Elena has also been selected to participate in the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra (TSO) and AYO special performance project in September 2012 and the AYO Chamber Players Program.  The TSO and AYO performance project is a season highlight and in 2012 it will be led by Conductor Marko Letonja with soloist, pianist Piers Lane.  This is a major achievement by a first year student and the gifted Elena is to be congratulated.

Similarly, honours student and percussionist Joel Bass was accepted in to the AYO for both the July and February 2012 seasons.  Joel also made it in to the final round of auditions for the principal percussionist with the Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestra.   There is no doubt Joel has a successful future ahead.  Pianist, Siang Ching Ngu was accepted for the second year in a row in to the AYO Chamber Music Program and has accepted the role as an orchestral pianist for 2012 season.  First year violin student Jasmin Parkinson-Stewart was accepted for the July season and is on reserve for three other programs.

Ben Pallagi, a first year clarinet student, won a position in the AYO Young Symphonists.  In 2012 the Musical Director for this program will be the eminent Richard Mills.  This will be an amazing experience for Ben and we congratulate him.   Clarinettist Alex McCracken won a position as a reserve for the AYO as did Tunley Scholarship winner, violinist Riley Skevington.
