Students from The University of Western Australia have gained valuable diplomatic experience through joint internships in the US and at the US Consulate in Perth.

Political science and international relations students Jack di Nunzio and Anita de Villiers each spent 100 hours as part of an Arts Practicum in an inaugural internship at Perth's US Consulate.  The UWA students helped write speeches, liaised with visiting dignitaries and assisted US Consul General visits to schools.

Anita, who is studying for a Master of International Relations, has also won an internship for three months at the Australian Consulate-General in New York.  It was the first time a UWA student had applied for this internship.

Two other political science and international relations students - Chris Colalillo and Niall O'Shea - will also travel to the US after winning Uni-Capitol Washington internships.

Chris will work with Republican Senator Mike Crapo and Niall will work with Democrat Representative Joe Courtney.  Their two-month internships start in January.  These students follow 12 previous UWA students who have participated in the program since 2004.

The educational and professional internships were designed and created in Washington DC in 1999 exclusively for Australian university students.  The Uni-Capitol Washington Internship Program enables students from eight Australian universities to apply for 12 annual internships to House and Senate offices in the US Congress.

In July, Valeria Minigoulova completed a two-month internship to Australia's UN mission in New York.
