October Update - Introducing
the new UWA Network
After many months of intense effort in design work, laying of
new fibre network cabling, and implementation and testing of new
state-of-the-art Cisco networking equipment, the network project team are
putting the final touches on plans for commissioning the new UWA network - the
cornerstone of the Business Investment Programme.
Activities scheduled
during October are:
-
Connecting the new network infrastructure to the existing UWA
network in order to begin migration of services to the new Network
-
Commissioning of a new 10GB internet link to provide capacity to
support much faster speed and higher data volume internet access. We will
retain our existing 1GB internet link, to provide us resilience in the event
that one of the links is taken out of action through accidental circumstances,
or through planned maintenance activities.
-
Connection of the Business School to the new network.
Business
School readiness to Connect
The Business School is currently scheduled
for connection to the new UWA network on October 17.
The Business School has
been selected as the first go-live site for full implementation of the new UWA
network as it is a relatively new building with up to date internal network
cabling. Considerable re-cabling effort
is required in many of our older buildings before full performance of the new
network will be realised in those locations.
IT staff within the
Business School have been working very
closely with the project teams in preparing for the connection to the new network, and have done an outstanding job in preparing for the subsequent
migration of their servers and data storage to the new data centre facilities.
