The next step in plans to build new high-quality student residential accommodation at The University of Western Australia is about to get underway.

Additions to Currie Hall - a residential college at UWA - on the corner of Winthrop Avenue and Mounts Bay Road, Crawley, will provide an additional 515 new self-catering dwellings at below market rental rates.

The expansion will increase opportunities for disadvantaged students to gain access to quality tertiary education, particularly for those who are disabled or from WA regional or low socio-economic backgrounds.

Probuild has been awarded the construction project, and recent WA Planning Commission approval has enabled work to start for a December 2012 completion date.

The project is part of the National Rental Affordability Scheme, a joint initiative between the Federal and State Governments.

The design by architects Hassell builds on the University's collegiate environment and expands Currie Hall's opportunities for social interaction, quiet reflection and study.

The main elements consist of three new five to seven-storey buildings, three major courtyards, secure storage for 200 bicycles and predominantly undercroft parking for 182 cars.

The project is designed to achieve a Five Star Green Star rating - a benchmark in sustainable development.

The Currie Hall development marks the first stage of a NRAS supported project to house up to 1000 more students on and around the Crawley campus.
