The University of Western Australia was once again represented by the UWA Western Waagyls at the 16 th National Indigenous Tertiary Education Student Games (NITESG), which was this year hosted by the University of Melbourne from 18 to 23 September.

UWA was the only Western Australian university represented and performed admirably, coming runner-up (out of 14 teams) to the host team, which are often the favourites to take out the event. James Cook University, who may host next year's games in Cairns, came a close third.

Results of the sports the team participated in were:

  • first in mixed basketball defeating Uni of Melbourne by one point in the final
  • third in mixed netball
  • fourth in mixed touch
  • reaching the quarter-finals in mixed volleyball.

Jordan AhChee received the Champion Male award as well as being named in the game's All-star Team overall plus All-star Team selection for basketball, netball and volleyball. Grace Plichta was named in the overall All-star Team as well as for netball. Dylan Collard was selected in the All-star volleyball team and Jedda Hill was selected in the All-star team for touch.

Team members will vote on their own individual male and female MVPs for the carnival, which will be announced at the UWA Sports Awards night to be held on 25 November.

The experience proved to be even more invaluable as the team were able to experience the Friday night blockbuster AFL Preliminary Final at the MCG between Hawthorn and Collingwood (a crowd of nearly 90,000 people attended), which will be embedded in their memories forever.
