In a significant ceremony the Rector of Indonesian Institute of the Arts (ISI) Profesor Dr I Wayan Rai, along with Ibu Made Rinu the Dekan of the Faculty of Art and Design (FSRD), signed an agreement of collaboration with the Faculty of Architecture, Landscape and Visual Arts (ALVA).

The signing took place in Denpasar on 26 July after the completion of the inaugural In Country exchange program. Nineteen students from the Faculty participated in a program of art and cultural immersion for three weeks in June and July this year.

The agreement was the culmination of four years of co-ordinated cultural exchanges organised by Assistant Professor Paul Trinidad. With the support of Winthrop Professor Simon Anderson, Dean of ALVA and Prof Dr Rai, the Rector of ISI Denpasar, the In Country program has been developed between the two faculties.

Heralded as an unprecedented success by the Indonesian Ministry of National Education, the program has been promoted as a benchmark for developing international relations between universities, achieving educational reform at the highest level.

In a recent letter to Vice-Chancellor Alan Robson, Professor Rai expressed his gratitude to UWA.
Professor Rai extended his thanks to the team at FSRD and to Assistant Professor Paul Trinidad for their dedication to excellence in the development and delivery of the project.

A green light has been given to begin preparations for a second studio to be undertaken in  2012. It is hoped that the program will become a fixture in the ALVA course offerings providing additional overseas study opportunities for UWA students.

The next phase of cultural exchange continues as two lecturers from ISI Denpasar make preparations to visit ALVA this month. They will bring with them works for an exhibition to be held in the Cullity Gallery from September 4 - 23. They will also be presenting seminars and workshops on their art techniques.

The visit will provide an opportunity for students and staff who are curious about Balinese culture to gain an insight into the nature and offerings of the program at ISI.
