Presented by Cather Simpson, Ph.D, Director, The Photon Factory, University of Auckland, NZ
2010 marked the 50th anniversary of the invention of the laser. The laser has come a long way from those early days, and is now a vital tool in virtually every field of scientific advance. In the Photon Factory, a multiuser laser facility at the University of Auckland, we exploit the characteristics of pulsed lasers to further research in physics, chemistry, biology and medicine.

This presentation will focus upon two extremes: ultrafast spectroscopic studies of the fundamental mechanisms of how molecules 'decide' what to do with the energy they absorb in the form of light, and the application of these laser pulses to manufacture a device to explore how antarctic fish survive sub-zero temperatures without freezing.
