Winthrop Professor Izan and Associate Professor Abu Siddique , both from the UWA Business School , have won two of six Excellence in Teaching Awards presented by the University in 2011.

Winthrop Professor Izan also received a Citation for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning award from the Australian Learning and Teaching Council (ALTC). The citation reads: ‘For 30 years of outstanding teaching, supervision and university service, improving the overall experience of business school students.'

Winthrop Professor Izan is Deputy Dean of the UWA Business School. She first joined the University in 1981, was appointed Professor in 1990, and served as Head of the Department of Accounting and Finance from January 1994 to December 1999. Winthrop Professor Izan has won numerous teaching awards, and supervises honours and PhD students in the Finance discipline.

Associate Professor Abu Siddique is Director, Postgraduate Economics Programs at the UWA Business School. In 2008 he served as Head of the Economics Discipline, and between 1995 and 2009 he was Director of the Trade, Migration and Development Centre. Associate Professor Siddique holds research expertise in contemporary development economics areas such as environment, corruption, good governance and international migration, with special focus on the Asia-Pacific region. He has previously received a UWA Excellence in Teaching Award Commendation and a Faculty Teaching Award in the category of Citation for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning, and supervises honours, masters and PhD students in the Economics discipline.

‘Winthrop Professor Izan and Associate Professor Siddique are both great examples of teaching staff who consistently go above and beyond in helping their students achieve their full potential, and we are proud to have them at the Business School,' said Winthrop Professor Tracey Horton, Dean, UWA Business School.

Faculty Award winners were also recognised at the annual UWA teaching awards ceremony, held on 7 June 2011. They included Professor Ray Fells, Associate Professor Alan Simon, Assistant Professor Joanne Sneddon, Winthrop Professor Gary Stockport, Ms. Mei-Hsiu Chen, Mr. Ken Jun Foo, and Ms. Candice Lamb.

In addition, Dr. Donella Caspersz and Assistant Professor Doina Olaru received one of only four UWA fellowships awarded for 2011. Dr Caspersz and Assistant Professor Olaru are Faculty Advisors to the Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) UWA team, which manages projects assisting high school students, Indigenous communities, family businesses and various underprivileged groups. The SIFE UWA team won the national championships in 2008, 2009 and 2010.
