Ocean:  Opportunities in Exploring the Planet's Last Frontier is the title of the Inaugural Professorial Oration by Director of The University of Western Australia Oceans Institute, Professor Carlos Duarte.

Professor Duarte will discuss the need for broad interdisciplinary approaches in developing excellence in research and technology and in delivering ocean-based solutions.

He will argue that the ocean represents a largely untapped reservoir of resources and opportunities which offer a huge potential for innovation.

Professor Duarte is leading the Malaspina 2010 Expedition, a Spanish circumnavigation examining the impacts of global change on ocean ecosystems.  Among his many projects, he is working with the United Nations and the World Bank to increase sustainable production of marine aquaculture, as well as the restoration and conservation of coastal habitats.
