The University of Western Australia's Winthrop Professor Fiona Stanley, child health expert and Director of the Telethon Institute for Child Health Research, has been appointed to the board of the ABC.

At the end of the year, former Australian of the Year and Companion of the Order of Australia, Professor Stanley is stepping down from her role at the Institute which she founded 20 years ago.

Professor Stanley will continue her strong association with The University of Western Australia as a Vice Chancellor's Distinguished Professorial Fellow.

Her appointment was announced by Communications Minister Stephen Conroy on Friday.

"Professor Stanley's broad involvement in a knowledge of children's, youth and Indigenous cultural issues as well as her experience in the management of large organisations will be invaluable to the ABC in fulfilling its charter obligations," Senator Conroy said.
