UWA Publishing titles, Selected Poems of Dorothy Hewett , edited by Kate Lilley, and Vite Italiane: Italian Lives in Western Australia , by Susanna Iuliano, have been shortlisted for the 2010 Western Australian Premier's Book Awards.

Selected Poems of Dorothy Hewett , shortlisted for the Poetry Award, is a very personal book of selected poetry compiled by Dorothy's daughter, the poet and literary scholar Kate Lilley, that encapsulates Hewett's enduring themes of grief, loss, despair and memory.

Vite Italiane: Italian Lives in Western Australia , shortlisted for the State Library of Western Australia WA History Award, contains the remarkable stories of hundreds of Italian migrant families who have enriched Western Australia's cultural, political, economic and social character since the 1880s.

UWA Publishing director, Terri-ann White was extremely pleased with the short listings. "Both of these books represent an important part of Australia's literary and cultural history," she said.

Minister for Culture and the Arts, John Day, said a record number of 571 entries were submitted this year, compared to 400 for the 2009 Awards.

"I am pleased these important Awards are attracting so many entries from a wide range of publishers," Mr Day said.

The winners will be announced in September 2011.
