The University of Western Australia is proud that another of its graduates, Dr Malcolm McCusker AO QC, is to be the next Governor of Western Australia.

As announced by the Western Australian Premier , Dr McCusker will take over on 1 July from His Excellency Dr Ken Michael, also a UWA graduate.

UWA Vice-Chancellor Professor Alan Robson said Dr McCusker was an outstanding choice as Governor. The recipient of a UWA Honorary Degree of Doctor of Laws, Dr McCusker is well known for his commitment to championing justice in the community.

"Dr McCusker exemplifies the University's principle of service to the community. In addition to his legal interests, Dr McCusker has been involved in many community causes and with his wife Tonya (also a UWA Law graduate), he is well-known as a leading philanthropist."

And Internationally recognised lawyer and academic Professor James Edelman has been appointed a Judge of the Supreme Court of Western Australia.

Professor Edelman will commence his Supreme Court duties on July 25 while his wife Sarah Percy will also take up a professorship in international relations at The University of Western Australia.

Awarded a Bachelor of Laws degree, First Class Honours, from The University of Western Australia in 1997, Professor Edelman was named Western Australia's Rhodes Scholar in 1998. He also obtained a Bachelor of Economics from UWA in 1995.

He completed a Doctor of Philosophy in Law at Oxford University in 2001 and was also awarded a Master of Arts (Honorary) degree from Oxford in 2005.

Professor Edelman completed his articles of clerkship with Blake Dawson and was admitted to practice in 1998.

Since 2001, he has practised as a barrister from the chambers of Malcolm McCusker, QC.  He also practises as a barrister in London.

Since 2002, Professor Edelman has lectured at universities in Australia, Britain, Europe and the United States.

In 2008, he was appointed Professor of the Law of Obligations at Oxford, becoming the youngest professor of law in the university's history.
