Professor Jacqui Ramagge from Wollongong University gave a stimulating talk on 26 May 2011 addressing the questions "Are Maths and English really so different? and "Is Mathematics a foreign language."

Professor Ramagge identified how Mathematics and English have long been identified as the core of a basic education and the key to life-long success and yet many people, particularly early-childhood and primary teachers, are much more comfortable with language than they are with Mathematics.

Her talk discussed "Why is that? Are Mathematics and English really so different? Can anyone learn Mathematics?"

What does it mean to be fluent in Mathematics (given that fluency is one of the proficiency strands in the new Australian Mathematics Curriculum)?

The summary of this thought provoking talk is available online .
