The Faculty of Life and Physical Sciences and the School of Anatomy and Human Biology would like to congratulate the school’s many staff and students who have achieved recent successes.

Dr Avinash Bharadwaj has been named as a winner of the 2011 Coursework Teaching Award (First Year Teaching).

The Award which was presented at the Faculty of Life & Physical Sciences Prize-Giving Ceremony on May 25 consists of $1500 prize money.

Dr John Lesku has won a UWA Postdoctoral Research Fellowship. John has just completed his PhD in Germany at the Max Planck Institute for Ornithology. He is interested in why animals sleep, with his postdoctoral research topic being “The Evolution and Function of Rapid Eye Movement Sleep”. This was a cross-school application with the School of Biomedical, Biomolecular and Chemical Sciences (Shane Maloney) and Anatomy and Human Biology (Peter Eastwood).

Reece Parry has been awarded a $3,000 grant from the National Stroke Foundation for his Project: "Are Swallowing Problems in Acute Stroke Patients Associated with Obstructive Sleep Apnoea?"

Reece is supervised by Winthrop Professor Peter Eastwood, Dr Jennifer Walsh and Claire Langdon (Department of Speech Pathology, Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital).

Ruth Chai was awarded the Fisher Biotec Prize for an Excellent Oral Presentation and $300 in prize money at the Symposium of Western Australia Neuroscience held on April 29 2011.

Jessica Terrill and Hannah Crabb have each been awarded a Fellowship worth 500 Euros to attend the International Congress of the World Muscle Society in Algarve, Portugal from October 18-22 2011.
