The University of Western Australia has welcomed new indexation arrangements for higher education which will deliver an additional $550m to Australian universities over the next five years.

UWA Vice-Chancellor, Professor Alan Robson, said the sector would be delighted that the Federal Government had acknowledged that increasing indexation was an appropriate method of improving the recurrent funding of universities.

"This decision will have benefits across a range of programs relating to university teaching and research," Professor Robson said.

"It appears the Government is heeding the calls of the higher education sector which has been saying for many years that the quality of Australian higher education would suffer without greater government investment."

Professor Robson also commended the Government for the decision to support growth in enrolments through additional funding.

"These measures will mean that more young people will be able to benefit from a university education.

"In addition, new regional funding from the Education Investment Fund and increased loadings for regional students would provide new opportunities for universities to support additional regional students," Professor Robson said.
