The University of Western Australia Business School congratulates the 25 scholarship recipients and 57 prize winners for 2011.

The students were presented with their awards at a prizegiving ceremony held on Thursday, 5 May at the University Club of Western Australia.

Winthrop Professor Tracey Horton, Dean, UWA Business School, congratulated all the winners. ‘We are extremely proud of the achievements of our prize and scholarship winners,’ said Professor Horton. ‘The competition for these awards is intense, and this year’s winners are a credit to the School.

‘I would also like to thank the many donors of these awards. The awards allow us to reward high performing students and also assist deserving students who may not otherwise be able to pursue higher education.’

The large number of scholarships and prizes offered by the School is in part due to the Tomorrow Starts Here fundraising campaign, which concluded in 2009 after raising $25 million to benefit the School’s students, faculty and research.

The scholarships and prizes reward high achieving students in a variety of fields, including accounting and finance, mining and resources, and entrepreneurship, as well as assisting students from rural and disadvantaged backgrounds.

Some of the scholarship winners spoke about how, with less financial pressures, they would now be able to devote more time to their studies. Others planned to use the scholarship money to purchase important equipment, such as expensive software packages and laptops.

‘Obtaining this scholarship is a brilliant opportunity for me, both as a launching pad into working in the mining industry after graduation and to enable me to commit more time to my Honours project and coursework,’ said Virginia Gogan, the winner of a BHP Billiton Honours Scholarship.

The Business School is grateful to the individuals and organisations who choose to foster the leaders of tomorrow. Previous scholarship and prize winners have gone on to gain employment with leading organisations both nationally and internationally.
