The University of Western Australia Business School student Eu Dee Wee will complete an internship in the United States with Merrill Lynch, the world's largest brokerage firm, over the coming American summer.

Eu Dee, a third year Commerce student completing majors in Finance (Corporate), Finance (Investment) and Money and Banking, applied for the position while on exchange at HAAS School of Business, University of California Berkeley (UCB).

He was successful in gaining one of just 11 internship positions, against competition from hundreds of other applicants, many of whom came from Ivy League universities.

Eu Dee put his success down to plain hard work and perseverance. He maintained a good grade point average (GPA) while at HAAS School of Business, and was chosen to act as an assistant to Professor Frank Schultz in one class taught at the school. From there, he was able to obtain several references from his professors, influencing a decision that granted him a work visa for up to four months and thus removed a significant obstacle to working in America.

During his internship, Eu Dee will work as a financial advisor. ‘I will be working with the Vice President of one of the leading wealth management divisions in Merrill Lynch, The Ting Group,' explained Eu Dee. ‘During the internship, I will have access to the knowledge resources at Merrill Lynch and will be given the opportunity to experience activities such as portfolio management, presentations and meeting high net worth clients.'

Eu Dee initially chose to go on exchange to UCB to broaden his educational and cultural experience. ‘It was actually quite daunting initially as I knew that the best of the American and overseas students would be there,' said Eu Dee. ‘However, I wanted the challenges UCB could offer and I knew UWA had prepared me well for it.

‘At UCB, I had the opportunity to network with associates from companies like Facebook, Microsoft's Bing, Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, Bank of America, GE and many other famous and successful American corporations. This was new to me, as I have never experienced such an influx of very senior executive and prominent people coming down to network with the students. It was a very valuable experience.'

Nancy Euske, Eu Dee's lecturer for a Leadership course at UCB, praised Eu Dee's skills and hard work. ‘He is an excellent student,' said Ms Euske. ‘He's bright, inquisitive, mature and hard-working... Eu Dee will be an asset as an Intern at Merrill Lynch. He is passionate about private wealth management and investment banking. He has the intelligence and stamina to succeed in this industry.'

After he completes his degree, Eu Dee hopes to pursue a career in banking and finance. ‘I will work towards being a successful private wealth management  banker,' said Eu Dee, ‘and if required will take a sabbatical break in between to pursue an advanced degree in banking or business administration.'

Eu Dee will begin his internship at Merrill Lynch in May.
