Democracy has suffered in a modern society obsessed with display, according to a new book to be launched by Winthrop Professor Carmen Lawrence at The University of Western Australia tomorrow.

Democracy in the Age of New Media - The Politics of the Spectacle was written by Assistant Professor Tauel Harper, chair in Communication Studies at UWA.

In the book, Professor Harper uses critical democratic theory to outline the effects of consumer culture on citizenship.

He highlights the importance that public space plays in creating the critical culture necessary for a health democracy and outlines how contemporary public spaces - shopping centres, the Internet, social networking sites and suburban communities - contribute to this culture.

WHAT: Launch of Democracy in the Age of New Media - The Politics of the Spectacle.

WHEN: 5.30pm, Wednesday, March 30, 2011.

WHERE: Eileen Joyce Studio, School of Music, The University of Western Australia (next to Somerville Auditorium).
