University of Western Australia 2008 law graduates and solicitors, Joseph C Wheeler and Auguste J Hocking, were selected as part of the mooting team for the McGill University’s Institute of Air and Space Law in Montreal Canada. The two aviation law enthusiasts had, independently of each other, shunned “regular” legal careers, seeking instead the exciting and inspiring world of aviation law.

On 14 March 2011 the McGill University team won the second Sarin-Leiden International Air Law Moot Court competition in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Practice of the moot team was facilitated by the UWA School of Law which permitted Joseph to use internet facilities for online “Skype” moot practices with team members who are still resident in Montreal.

The convincing win was McGill’s first in this competition. The team, with both UWA graduates as lead speakers, scored the highest totals for both the Applicant’s and Respondent’s written memorial/oral argument following a tough two days of semi-final mock court hearings in Dubai against nine other international teams.

The moot semi finals were judged by a panel of international aviation law experts including Professors, Airline Counsel, Government Regulators and private lawyers. The grand final was presided over by an ex-President of the International Court of Justice (His Excellency HE Gilbert Guillaume), the Chief Justice of the Cassation Court, United Arab Emirates (Judge Dr. Ali Ibrahim Alimam) and a Legal Officer from the International Civil Aviation Organization in Montreal (Dr Jiefang Huang). It was a star studded event which was hosted by the Director of the Dubai Civil Aviation Authority and Chairman of the Emirates Group (His Highness Sheikh Ahmed Bin Saeed Al Maktoum).
