Some of the State's top students have been presented with scholarships to study at The University of Western Australia during a ceremony at Winthrop Hall.
The annual UWA Fogarty Foundation Undergraduate Awards and Scholarships this year recognised 201 students from around the State.
Of the nine Fogarty Foundation Scholarships Perth Modern School student Michael Taran was awarded the 2010 Beazley Medal, which includes payment of HECS course fees (including an Honours year) and $1,000 per year.
Michael was Dux of his year in General Maths, Specialist Maths, Economics, Chemistry and Physics. He was also the highest ranked WA student in the 2010 Price Waterhouse Coopers Economics competition.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Alan Robson said the awards and scholarships recognised Western Australian students who were committed to their quest for excellence, as well as the families that had supported them.
"Our scholarship winners represent the State's most valuable resource. They are our future and we are delighted they have chosen to study at The University of Western Australia," Professor Robson said.
The centrepiece of the scholarship program is the 161 UWA Excellence Awards, providing guaranteed entry to the University for the best and brightest UWA-bound student from each of the State's senior secondary schools.
This year's scholarships included students from high schools involved in Aspire UWA, which encourages high school students from traditionally under-represented communities to enrol at UWA. Two Humanitarian Excellence Awards were also presented to recipients who arrived in Australia on a humanitarian visa.
The University awarded five Group of Eight Scholarships offered by a coalition of Australia's leading research universities including UWA to provide greater opportunities for promising students from diverse backgrounds.
Diversity and Merit Awards, which provide financial support for academically excellent students from diverse social and economic backgrounds, were presented to 26 students.
Also awarded were seven Vice-Chancellor's Awards of Distinction and five Alumni Awards of Distinction for students who excelled academically and across a range of activities including leadership, public speaking, sport, music and service to others.
