Following last year's appointment of Professor Paul Flatau as its inaugural Chair of Social Investment and Impact, the Centre for Social Impact at the UWA Business School is now set to become even more active. It will begin delivering the new Graduate Certificate in Social Impact to its first intake of students this March, and will also roll out its program of research and industry studies.

The new Graduate Certificate is designed for those working in, or seeking to work in, the not-for-profit sector, business, social enterprise, government, or the public affairs sector. It will assist managers and community leaders by equipping them with the necessary tools to build sustainable communities and enterprises.

Specialist units will include: Social Impact: Entrepreneurs and Social Innovation; Demonstrating Social Impact; Corporate Responsibility and Accountability; Social Investment and Philanthropy; and Leadership for Social Impact. These units will also be available to Master of Business Administration and Master of Commerce students.

Professor Flatau, Director, Centre for Social Impact at the UWA Business School, said that the Centre was excited to be offering the new course in Western Australia. ‘The course aims to provide the critical leadership skills required to manage organisations and social programs, lead social innovation and create social value,' he said. ‘One of the key areas of study includes social impact assessment and frameworks such as Social Return on Investment (SROI) and Social Accounting and Audit (SAA).'

In addition, the Centre will also be engaging in research studies, and public engagement and community discussion activities surrounding the key fields of social investment, social innovation and the assessment of social impact.

On 17 March, the Centre will launch its new blog with a panel discussion on the topic: ‘Are community organisations at a crossroad?' The event will be held at the Parmelia Hilton Perth, with Cheryl Kernot moderating the discussion.

The discussion will feature four panellists: Debbie Karasinski, CEO, Senses Foundation; Paul Flatau, Director, Centre for Social Impact, UWA Business School; Chris Hall, CEO, MercyCare and President of WACOSS; and Rebecca Brown, Executive Director, Premier and Cabinet.

It will be followed the next day by the first class of the new graduate certificate.
