A lot of people probably don't know who or what the Admissions Centre and Prospective Students Office are, or what exactly it is that we do within the university. Basically, while the rest of the university goes into ‘shutdown' over the Christmas period, with staff leaving their jobs and busy workloads behind to take some much-deserved R&R before another academic year begins, the Admissions Centre and Prospective Students Office remain open and commence what is, for us, the busiest time of year.

From the time that WACE results are released in December, right through until semester begins on February 28, we field around 7000 phone calls, hundreds of online queries and walk-in enquiries from applicants all over the state (and sometimes interstate). Whew!

The majority of these enquiries are from high-school students and concerned parents wanting to know everything from how the TISC preference system works, to whether they will meet the subject prerequisites for the degree they want to study, and what they can do if they haven't got the ATAR score they anticipated.

We understand that, to people on the outside looking in, universities can sometimes seem like impenetrable fortresses, and it's easy to assume that you're just a number in a queue.  Our job in the Admissions Centre and Prospective Students Office is to ensure that there is always a human voice on the other end of the line, as people try to negotiate what is, for them, one of the most definitive moments of their lives (so far!).

No rest for us now.  We're taking bookings for school visits and expos and have already commenced our road trips for 2011. We're here to help people come to UWA so please don't hesitate to call to book a visit, to ask questions about admission requirements or a course you are interested in.
