UWA Business School
The University of Western Australia's Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) team is inviting all students, teachers, parents, and the wider school community to participate in the Carbon Futures Challenge 2011.

The Carbon Futures Challenge is an innovative online competition where participants incorporate environmentally sustainable habits into to their everyday lives. Over three weeks, participants compete to make the biggest sustainable reduction to their carbon footprint in the categories of water, transport, or energy consumption.

‘Carbon Futures hopes to demystify the belief that it is pointless for just one individual to reduce carbon emissions because it makes almost no difference to the environment,' said Catherine Mah, SIFE UWA president. ‘The difference is significant for each individual. Each participant's daily footprint is graphically modelled alongside all other participants so they can track their progress and see how small changes in their behaviour can reduce kilograms of carbon dioxide.'

This year, SIFE UWA will be running two Carbon Futures competitions. The first challenge runs from 21 March to 10 April 2011, with registration closing on 21 March 2011. A Carbon Futures account can be created at https://carbonfutures.biz.uwa.edu.au/. Participation is free and there is a prize pool worth over $2,000.

For the first time, the competition is also giving participants the opportunity to share their experience by submitting a short video (one to five minutes long) to the Carbon Futures Video Competition. The winner will receive a Sony ‘bloggie' MP4 HD Camera.

Carbon Futures has recently been endorsed by the Minister for Climate Change and Energy Efficiency Hon Greg Combet AM, MP.
