More than 90 UWA staff have elected to join forces this Clean Up Australia Day to banish rubbish from the Matilda Bay Foreshore and Crawley campus.

An emu procession will converge on adjacent parklands on Friday 4 March to beautify the University’s surroundings for all to enjoy and protect our neighbouring waterways from litter.

The Clean Up Team will also target areas on campus that attract high litter levels, including rubbish blown onto the grounds from public thoroughfares.

Event organiser and Sustainable Development’s communications and engagement officer Trish Howard said she was thrilled with the high number of staff participating.

“We’ve got representatives from a wide range of faculties and departments taking part, which indicates the UWA staff community as a whole are socially and environmentally responsible. That’s something to be proud of,” she said.

The initiative has also gained a high level of support from UWA businesses: the Uni Club is sponsoring a thank-you breakfast for all participants and the Co-op Bookshop is donating prizes.
