9 February 2011: Clean Up Australia is on the hunt for the greenest teachers across Australia, with nominations opening on 8 February for the 2011 Clean Up Australia Green Teacher Award.

“Teaching our children about sustainability is the smartest thing we can do,” said Ian Kiernan AO, Chairman of Clean Up Australia. “The Green Teacher Award is an opportunity to recognise the fantastic teachers who are educating future generations about how our actions affect the planet and the importance of looking after the environment.”

The Green Teacher Award showcases environmentally motivated teachers and their green projects, lesson plans or other sustainability initiatives. Clean Up Australia is proud to acknowledge the efforts that these Green Teachers make right across schools, in every state and territory Australia wide.

The Award is open to all teachers at primary and high schools that have registered for the 2011 Schools Clean Up Day on Friday 4 March.

The Green Teacher Award, now in its third year, is sponsored by SANYO. Prizes will be awarded at both a state and a national level. The national winner will receive a SANYO PDG-DWL2500 ultra short throw projector worth $3000 – an ideal tool for classrooms in the digital age.

Teachers can enter or nominate colleagues at www.cleanupaustraliaday.org.au. They will be judged on criteria including originality, outcomes and the leadership they show in creating a school sustainability project. Nominations close on Friday 25 March 2011, with recipients announced on Tuesday 26 April 2011.

Last year’s national winner, Wayne Holloway of Ashby Primary School in Victoria, was awarded for his innovative ‘Ashby re-use a shoe’ project. This project encouraged students to think beyond typical recycling programs. One hundred shoes were collected and all parts of the shoes were used to create sporting surfaces. This initiative demonstrates to students that they can think creatively when it comes to recycling.

The 2011 Schools Clean Up Day takes place on Friday 4 March, the day when our kids don their gloves and remove rubbish from school sites. It is a key date in a week that also includes Business Clean Up Day on Tuesday 1 March and Clean Up Australia Day on Sunday 6 March.
