The School of Population Health played a major part in UWA being recognised as the top West Australian university in public health and health services research.

The Excellence in Research review, led by the Australian Research Council , rated the University’s research in this area as ‘above world standard.’

The Group of Eight universities have dominated the first ever national research ranking results, with UWA taking out the title of top WA research university and coming in sixth in the national rankings. Murdoch University was ranked 17, Curtin University 21 and Edith Cowan University (ECU) 30 out of 41 contenders.

The rating scale is 1 (well below to world standard), 2 (below world standard), 3 (at world standard), 4 (above world standard), 5 (well above world standard).

For the field of Public Health and Health Services, UWA was the only WA university to be rated 4 (above world standard), at equal status with University of Melbourne, University of Queensland and University of Sydney.  The only institution rated 5 was Australian National University.  All others rated 3 or less. The other rated WA institutions were Curtin (rated 1) and ECU (rated 1).

This is a very good result for UWA and the School of Population Health is of course a major contributor to UWA's rating in this field.

UWA averaged 3.64 across all assessed areas of research, achieving a well-above ranking for fields including earth sciences, psychology, medical and health sciences and agriculture and veterinary science.  Other strong fields for UWA included mathematical and environmental sciences, economics, creative arts and writing.

Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) Robyn Owens said the University was pleased to see the fields identified as UWA's top research priorities doing well, such as earth sciences and medical and health research.
