A Nobel Laureate and an internationally recognised neurobiologist have been appointed to the new Western Australian Technology and Industry Advisory Council.

UWA Professor Barry Marshall, co-director of the Marshall Centre for Infectious Diseases, and WA Premier's Research Fellow Winthrop Professor Shaun Collin, from UWA's School of Animal Biology and UWA's Oceans Institute will provide advice on science and technology policy and funding.

State Commerce and Science and Innovation Minister Bill Marmion said the council would play a critical advisory role in determining the strategic direction for industry, science and innovation in Western Australia.

The nine-member council will also include:

  • WA Chief Scientist Professor Lyn Beazley, from UWA's School of Animal Biology,
  • UWA Honorary Research Fellow Dr James (Jim) Ross, Chairman of Earth Science Western Australia and
  • John Poynton, Executive Chairman of Azure Capital, who holds an Adjunct Professorship in Financial Management at UWA.
