The Raine Medical Research Foundation has awarded seven Priming Grants-in-aid for the two-year period 2011-2012, with a funding allocation of $935,000 to:

  • Assistant Professor Julia Inglis, $150,000 for Exploring the role of nerve growth factor in osteoarthritis pain
  • Research Assistant Professor Natalie Ward, $105,000 for Cellular mechanisms underlying the cardiovascular benefits of tea
  • Research Assistant Professor Emma Glasson, $135,000 for Age-related health profiles of people with Down syndrome:  survival, hospitalisation and mortality
  • Assistant Professor Amanda Cleaver, $160,000 for Phenotype and function of the suppressive CD4 T cells that limit anti-PD-L1 tumour therapy
  • Professor Suzanne Rea, $120,000 for C haracterising the role of bone marrow derived cells in scar formation after burn injury
  • Associate Professor Helen Keen, $120,000 for the relationship between clinical phenotype and kinin bioregulation in arthritis
  • Dr Sarah Rea, $145,000 for Paget's disease of bone associated Sequestosome l/ p62 mutations in autophagy processes.

The 2011 Raine Research Prize was awarded to Winthrop Professor Britta Regli-von Ungern-Sternberg for her article: Risk assessment for respiratory complications in paediatric anaesthesia:  A prospective cohort study. Winthrop Professor REgli-von Ungern-Sternberg will receive a $5,000 travel grant and certificate of excellence.

The Raine Medical Research Foundation was established in 1957 by Mary Raine, who bequeathed her property empire to The University of Western Australia for the purpose of funding medical research.

Since it was set up, the Raine Foundation has made a distinguished contribution to medical research.  It has supported scores of major research projects, funded two Centres of Excellence, established fellowships and scholarships, sponsored the visits of numerous international scholars, participated in major joint ventures and fostered medical research at the undergraduate level.
