‘Engineering is for people' is the message of an inaugural photographic competition organised by The University of Western Australia's Faculty of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics.

And the winning and highly commended photographs - including of a wheelchair, a water pipe and wind turbines - provide graphic proof that engineering has a meaningful relationship with society, serving basic human needs and diverse communities.

Chair in Engineering Education, Winthrop Professor Caroline Baillie, said the 2010 Engineering for People Photography Competition was intended to raise awareness that engineers are interested in enhancing quality and justice in the world.

"This message is important for potential students, especially young women, and their parents. Young women are often concerned that what they do for a living is meaningful," Professor Baillie said.

In the Youth Photography Award category, the winner was Tracey Ly of Marangaroo. Rohan Golestani of Dalkeith was highly commended.

In the Open Photography Award category, the winner was Grace Di Benedetto of Mount Lawley. Colin White of Hillarys was highly commended.

An exhibition of the photographs will be held from 6pm on Tuesday 7 December at the Faculty's Monadelphous Integrated Learning Centre, Monadelphous Design Studio, Level One.

The photos are also available to view (along with the other entries that were submitted) on the Faculty's Flickr website:
